Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is there a time limit where I would need to stop medically-assisted treatment with buprenorphine for opioid-dependency?

There is no time limit for treatment. Some patients will need to take a buprenorphine product indefinitely, and others will be able to eventually taper and discontinue treatment.

If I am pregnant and take buprenorphine, will my baby still be born addicted?

Babies born to women who are addicted to heroin or other opioids can have withdrawal or abstinence symptoms, called neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). This can also occur with buprenorphine or methadone treatment.

Do I have to go to a buprenorphine clinic like I would to get treatment with methadone?

No, buprenorphine can be prescribed by clinicians in their office, if they have specialized training.
